If Your Website Isn’t Mobile-Friendly,
You Need to Get it Updated - and Here’s Why.
BY @SHANNONROUTLEY | APRIL 20TH 2015
Google is making changes to it’s search engine algorithm that will favour mobile-friendly websites, specifically, for mobile search results. Considering that mobile searches make up approximately 50% of all search queries and match this with the fact that one of the single largest drivers for business today are search results; you have the perfect storm for what can be a make-it-or-break-it scenario for your business.
The change by Google has been dubbed 'Mobile-Geddon' by some.
When Is This Taking Effect?
Coming April 21st 2015, Google will start rolling out this new algorithm and it will be effective within a few days to a weeks time. Unlike past major changes to their search engine algorithm, Google has been public with this news and it has been hitting mainstream press. This isn’t surprising as a change like this can have a direct economical impact.
How Can I Tell If My Website is Responsive or Not?
There are a number of ways to tell if your website is responsive. A direct way is to visit Google’s Webmaster Tools mobile friendly test. You’ll be able to enter in your websites’ URL and the results are either a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. There aren’t any in-betweens or degrees of ‘mobile-friendliness’.
Oh No! My Site Isn’t Optimized. What Can I Do?
If you are a current Mediashaker customer and you are running on our ShoutCMS platform, the good news is that your website can be updated to a mobile-responsive design. In most cases, our designers need to add a new front-end framework to your website and style it to look like your current website. In the best of cases, we’ll use this opportunity to make other considerations so that your website isn’t just ‘friendly’, but give it a design refresh that reflects the trends of the day and is more effective in connecting with customers.
How Quickly Can You Update Our Website?
Each website is different, and in some cases we can turn the changes around for you in 1-2 weeks. Despite what may seem like a mobile doomsday scenario, you actually don’t want to rush updating your website, as there are other important Search Engine Optimization factors to consider and we want to look at the whole strategy. Importantly, once your website is updated to a mobile-friendly design, your site can be submitted to Google and the change will improve your overall results.
